International Women’s Day: A Day to Celebrate Women
Friday 8th March is International Women’s Day (IWD) – a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. A day that also marks a call to action for accelerating gender equality.
Super important. Super inspiring.
IWD has taken place for well over a century and continues to be celebrated by groups collectively across the world.
Shining a light on female entrepreneurs
At Marketing Vision, we are very fortunate to work with and meet many incredible female entrepreneurs – all doing amazing things. Yet all too often, we as females are pretty reserved when it comes to shouting about our achievements.
So, this International Women’s Day, we invited four fabulous female business owners to share something that they’re really proud of having achieved in their business journey.
Here’s what these amazing women so generously shared with us:
Hannah Nunn designs and makes paper-cut lighting, wallpaper and fabrics inspired by the tiny details of the natural world. We met as co-guest speakers at a Country Living event where I loved hearing Hannah’s business story.
Based in Hebden Bridge, Hannah has a global customer base and her beautiful designs are enjoyed by customers around the world:
I once dreamed of having a light filled studio and supporting myself with my creations. I didn’t really know back then what I would create but I listened carefully to the whispers as they unfolded over the years and developed my business slowly step by step – first cards, then lamps, then a shop, then wallpaper and window films. I’m so proud that I have wonderfully supportive customers and send my products all over the world. I love that my business supports me and has become a vehicle to express myself creatively every day.
Emma Benz is an award-winning watercolour artist based in Oxfordshire. We met via Instagram and Emma has quickly become my ‘go-to’ person for special greeting cards – both for home and business life.
Emma’s beautiful cards, prints and original paintings can be found at galleries and boutiques throughout the UK. She was also recently spotted to exhibit at a major UK retail trade show:
In January this year I did my first ever trade show, Top Drawer in London. This was my first time doing an event of this size and I was a little overwhelmed at the thought of exhibiting alongside many well-known and established businesses. I worked tirelessly in the months leading up to it but once the show arrived, I was so proud of all I had achieved. My stand represented everything I had accomplished and produced up to this point and so it was amazing to see just how far I had come in the first year of my business. I am now starting planning for my next trade show and so excited to take on the next challenge.
Laura Coleman, founder of Be. Modern Meditation is a Meditation Coach specialising in guiding people from fidgety sceptic to confident meditator.
Based in Hampshire, Laura has recently relocated back to the UK from Australia. She brings a refreshingly modern approach to meditation, and is deeply passionate about making it accessible, achievable and rewarding.
Creating my business was such a personal journey. It was about more than being “successful” and making money. It was the culmination of years of soul searching, dreaming and learning. What I’m most proud of is that it’s fully and completely “Me”. No hiding, pretence or show. Most special of all for me is that it represents an acceptance and belief in who I am and what I’m capable of – flaws and imperfections included. Finding what makes you spark and feel most alive is such a gift and I feel so privileged that I get to call it my job.
Alison Battisby is founder of Avocado Social – a specialist social media consultancy which provides practical social media strategy, training and consulting to growing businesses and brands.
Alison and her team of experts empower businesses to use social media effectively and provide them with the tools they need to connect with their audience online.
I’m really proud that I listened to my gut when growing my business. I was advised to hire a team and rent expensive office space in order to grow – but I resisted and instead decided to grow carefully and in a considered way. This has allowed me to stay lean, deliver work in an agile way and work with a range of freelance experts which in turn provides us with a unique and attractive offering that sets Avocado Social apart! We’ve attracted the sort of clients we find exciting because of this and have managed to stay profitable throughout our four years in business.
Celebrate your successes
I think it is really important to celebrate successes in life – big or small. And as women, we most definitely need to get better at proudly sharing our achievements.
So on International Women’s Day, take a moment to bask in your glory (it’s not showing off – be proud!), support your female peers and let’s work collaboratively towards #BalanceForBetter.
We have a voice and we must use it. For how incredible would it be if our successes inspired female entrepreneurs of the future?
Thank you to our fabulous contributors – you are all amazing!
